Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation during which the subconscious mind can be influenced by a trained therapist. Hypnotherapy helps to cure many conditions of psychological origin including overeating, smoking, stress, anxiety, depression, phobias (eg. agoraphobia, dental phobia, fear of flying, fear of driving a car), tics, panic attacks, nervousness, stage fright, blushing, insomnia, nail biting, and lack of confidence. It can also help people with marital problems. If you are on tranquillizers, hypnosis will help you to wean yourself away from them. Hypnotherapy is also effective with body‑related problems such as physical injuries, skin disorders, warts, rashes, pre‑menstrual tension, menstrual pains, migraine, and bowel problems.
Most patients need 1 consultation and 3 therapy sessions, but obviously the amount of treatment required depends on your condition. A full case history needs to be taken before you can be given an accurate picture of the commitment required from you.
Some of the issues dealt with in this practice are: Bereavement, Divorce, Panic Attacks, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Agoraphobia, Alcohol Dependence, Compulsive Behaviour, Depression,  Blushing, Exam Nerves, Fear of Flying, Anger Management, Childhood problems, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) (ME).

All enquiries welcome. See full List of Leaflets, then email for a free informative leaflet sent to you as a Word attachment. On this website you can also read newspaper articles about this practice and papers published in academic journals.

RESEARCH REPORTS AND ESSAYS

You will enjoy reading these reports and essays if you are a little bit academic and would like to know more about hypnotherapy and psychology. Some of the reports, written as formal medical papers, are reprints of published work. The essays are designed to give you a deeper understanding of how your brain works.

BELIEF

The key role of belief in hypnotherapy. (Research Report No.1, pp.8, 1 Fig., 10 Tab., 8 Ref.). First published in European Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, April 1994, 1‑5. What determines your posthypnotic progress? Is it the lack of awareness of your immediate environment during hypnosis, or your inability to remember what you were told? How do relaxation and belief influence your progress? All these factors are considered in this investigation of just what it is that makes you respond posthypnotically.

PHOBIA

A case of AIDS phobia. (Research Report No.2, pp.4). First published in J.Nat.Reg.Hyp.Psych., Spring/Summer, 1987, 7‑11. A very readable account of how a man obsessed with a fear of AIDS was cured by counselling and hypnosis.  Useful for a general idea of how phobias and obsessions are tackled in this practice.

SLIMMING

Vivid body imagery in the treatment of the obese patient. (Research Report No.3, pp.4, 1 Ref.). First published in J.Nat.Reg.Hyp.Psych., 1988, 9‑12. Compulsive eating can be very effectively cured by imprinting the ideal body image of a slimmer on her mind during hypnosis. Strongly recommended reading for the intelligent slimmer.

STRESS METER

Enhancement of hypnotic rapport by continuous monitoring of electrical skin conductance. (Research Report No.4, pp.4, 13 Ref.). Find out why it is helpful to have you wired up to a stress meter during  hypnosis.

MONITORING STRESS

Hypnosis‑induced alteration in electrical skin conductivity and resistance. (Research Report No.5, pp.4, 3 Tab., 11 Ref.). Describes the changes which the therapist can see on the stress meter, which you are wired up to, as you relax during hypnosis.

BELIEF AND PROGRESS

An investigation of the hypnotherapy‑dependent progressive change in patients' belief in the efficacy of hypnosis and its association with therapeutic progress. (Research Report No.6, pp.4, 4 Tab., 6 Ref.). First published in European Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, 1997, 4, (1), 28-30. Is progress dependent on your state of belief in hypnosis at the consultation, or on your belief level after you have had 1, 2, or 3 hypnotherapy sessions? How does hypnotherapy influence your level of belief in hypnosis?

GENDER, CLASS & HYPNOTIC RESPONSE

A possible association of hypnotic susceptibility with gender and socio-economic group: Findings from an evaluation of hypnotherapy data. (Research Report No. 7, pp. 8, 6 Tab., 4 Ref.). First published in Journal of the Hypnotherapy Research Society (1998), I, (1), 4-10. Does being female and working class help you to respond better to hypnosis?

BRAIN AND CONSCIOUSNESS

Brain and consciousness. (Essay No.1, pp.8, 5 Ref.). Scientific experiments, both in history and of the present day, are recounted in an attempt to explain simple human activity in the context of the nervous system. This essay is a very useful introduction to a series of essays on mind and brain, two of which are currently available.

CONSCIOUSNESS AND BEHAVIOUR

Consciousness and Behaviour (Essay No.2, pp.12, 9 Ref.). How different parts of the brain interact to give rise to conscious experience.

Relax and read this

If you are thinking of hypnotherapy, a booklet published this week by a Glossop practitioner might help you to make up your mind.

Mr. Firoz Mohamed, of Sheffield Road, Glossop, decided to publish it in response to the numerous enquiries he has received from the public asking about hypnotherapy before they decide on whether or not to have treatment.

Mr. Mohamed is a trained psychologist with higher degrees from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Southampton University. He makes no attempt to persuade. "Every effort is made to be as informative as possible to give a full picture of what the therapy can and cannot do."

He maintains this objective approach throughout as he goes on to answer numerous questions regarding the nature of hypnosis and how it can help to cure psychological problems like smoking, stress, over‑eating, anxiety, depression, and phobias.

Many people say that hypnotherapists have tremendous powers, but Mr. Mohamed says he only knows a technique which he will teach to help you to influence your own mind. "You are the one with the powers," he says.

To the patient who cannot allow himself to believe that hypnosis can possibly help him or her personally, Mr. Mohamed's advice is equally frank. "If you are so negative about hypnotherapy, save your money and don't bother with treatment".

Readers are also told about the exact nature of the therapy, including the amount of time, money, and effort required from them. They may be surprised to discover that hypnosis does not involve a trance, anaesthesia, or unconsciousness of any kind.
